Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in
rescue. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful,
completely trained, perfectly behaved dog. We get the cast aways, the
orphans, the unwanted and unloved. Many rescue dogs have been pushed
from one lousy situation to the next. They've never had proper
veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company.
They've lived outside, in a crate, or in the basement.
Contrary
to popular thought though, many of them have not been abused, they have
“just” been neglected. They are not bad dogs, they are not incapable
of learning or loving. So many of them yearn for just that – love.
And they have so much to give in return. They love to make you happy
because when you are happy you do things that make them happy like
belly rubs or fetch. They want so much to be cherished and have that
attachment with a human. They are loyal, loving, happy go lucky family
members given half the chance.
Sure some are scared,
depressed or anxious. Some arrive sick. Some have all but given up.
But we don’t give up on them. We know that a dog is a living being,
with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities,
things, or something to be tossed away. They deserve as much love and
care and respect as the next Westminster champion. With a little
dedication, love and consistency in training you can have the most
loyal companion who will be forever grateful for you. Come to Rescue
to give, to love, to save a life -- and to mend your own spirit. Rescue
dogs are precious, all different but all beautiful and deserving of
love and adoration. Find your diamond (maybe still a bit in the
rough!) and give them a place to call home, a family of their own.
Rescue will reward you in ways you never thought possible. I can
promise you -- a rescue dog will make you a better person.
